Trip to Put-in-Bay - Canada Day 2008

This was a last minute trip. The weather report said two days of good weather - IN A ROW! So we went to Put-in-Bay.

We got the ferry on Catawba Island, near Cedar Point, Ohio.

We just made it! But the ferries run about every half hour.

The ferry dock on South Bass Island, Ohio. There is just one village on the island, Put-in-Bay. It's where sailors would 'put in at the bay' when storms were looming on Lake Erie.

If you go try the lobster bisque at the Boardwalk. Excellent!

Some very pleasant, slow, driving. There are many golf carts on the roads.

The welcome center had free cake! Birthday cake - for Canada, on Canada day!

The Canadian flag flyies next to the Stars and Stripes - all year long.

We stayed here, at the Ahoy Bed and Breakfast. It was $99 during the week this time of year.

They had bicycles for anyone staying at their B&B. It's only about a 10 minute walk to the downtown area.

We had dinner at Axel & Harry's. Very good! It was recommended by Nick, the owner of the B&B.

We went up to the observation deck on the Perry Monument in Put-in-Bay. Hey, what kind of car is that?!

Looking north you can see Middle Bass Island close by and North Bass Island farther out. The tiny island farther still is Middle Island, Ontario. Pelee Island is faintly visible on the horizon.

This is probably how we'll all be getting around some day. Many people rent golf carts and these sports-car scooters to get around the island.

Waiting for the ferry back to the mainland.

We definitely want to go back. We'll make it a WeMiata event next time. Everyone is trying to think of good Miata drives. I think everyone would love South Bass Island and the village of Put-in-Bay, Ohio. And we just had a recommendation for Kelleys Island, which is just east of South Bass. We'll have to check that one out too.
